Post leaf drop update. Think I will repot into proper soil in the spring, see how it goes and maybe give it another summer cutback. Think some of those branches need thickening though actually. Needs some wiring, and carving on the trunk top at some point I guess too.

I'd carve it now, and repot in spring.

Try and carve it as if it grew naturally as a broom, and avoid any obvious scars, hollows etc. Try to contour the branches and the scars.

Great progress!

There's plenty of bare brooms kicking about this time of year you need to look at some, maybe take pics and draw them so that you understand how they grow but remember to have one branch from any one spot. Notice that with the style you're starting with, one or two of the main branches curve up and in above the trunk line.

Just to make sure I'm following you - you mean that they are currently doing this and they shouldn't be? They should curve down if anything I guess..

Take a look at this lot for inspiration;

I meant that if you look, in nature they do curve up and over.

I think you will need to work towards filling the gap in the crown above the chop.

John - Thanks, that's helpful

Darren - Yes, I see what you mean. Some thickening of the primary branches, then more ramification I guess?

Grow the base of the primaries where you want them and for thickness, then cut them back one year and regrow to get taper and when you have the silhouette you want, then concentrate on building ramification.

Repotted this one today. Not much in the way of nebari unfortunately. Don't think I have any questions at this point, it just needs to grow for now I guess. I removed the bark in the autumn for the bits where I'll need to carve, but haven't actually done it yet, but I should probably do it before it has leaves I guess.
