I bought this Larch with the plan of making it an upright tree but as I’m not experienced I thought I’d ask for input/ideas before I make a dogs ear of it. https://flic.kr/p/23XBxfk Thanks, Mark |

Have you read Arihato''s larch notes? That's actually a good bit but you will use only the bottom foot at the absolute most I'd guess? |

Thanks Brendan. That’s what I thought, maybe even cutting at one of the thicker limbs and turning that into a tip/leader to help with taper and leave the bottom three or four branches to thicken up the base but with little experience I’m worried I mess up. Ionce gone no way to add back. I suppose I should just go for it. It’s a learning experience. Thanks, Mark |

Hi mark. Can you put on a photo which shows the lower trunk up to the first couple of branches. |

I think you should go for it (without being reckless of course). Just think through what you want to achieve before you cut. It's quite a small tree trunk wise and so will be quite a small tree height wise unless you choose to thicken it considerably by leaving it. Either way your future tree is in the lower trunk and branches and nothing higher so you need to develop those as a priority. If you just leave it the lower branches will probably weaken and die off and you'll be left with high foliage only and nothing to cut back to in the future. If you don't mind a photo bomb I'll post an example of what I did with one a bit like this. |

Gary, Fire away with your photos. More than happy to get info/ideas and criticisms. It’s the only way I’m going to learn. Thanks, Mark |

My point was simply to do something with yours - whatever you choose that to be. Here's a larch tall and slim like yours, Summer 2015. Notice the lower foliage is weakening and the buds on the lowest part of the trunk are very weak Chopped right back and wired March 2016 Wired into a windswept look March 2017 (as part of the weetrees challenge) Repotted and rewired March 2018 |

Thanks Gary. I did have a look at your post in the challenge and seen the wind swept photo which I rather liked. Mark |

I think this tree has great potential. Those thick lower branches close to the ground are rare with nursery larches, and they can lead to a terrific tree. Put a marker in the pot so we have a point of reference. Then take a pic from all 4 corners. Hold the camera level with the base of the tree and take the pics close enough so only the base of the trunk and the first few branches are in the frame. The top of the tree and the pot below are not needed for the pic. If you gently expose the top of the roots a couple of photos of those also help. Read this: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=14514 |
