Came across a 10 pack of hornbeam hedging in the clearance section today.£10. I had a go at doing a forest but really struggled to get the trees to stay where they are supposed to. Also only 5 out of the ten had usable roots, the other five had just a long taproot downwards with roots on the end of it so I put them in the garden.

There wasn't a dominant tree so I tried to use the two biggest as the focal point but it didn't really work how I wanted it to.

Hopefully the roots develop well in this pot and o can have another go at it with them next year, with the addition of a focal tree.

Good to give it a go. Your plan to re-position them next year makes sense. I did the same with a privet group a couple of years ago.

I'm glad that seems like a good idea. I'm questioning wether buying bareroot stock is even worth it for bonsai as the roots are never remotely radial in the few I have bought.

It makes things difficult but hopefully a year in a pot is enough to get more than just vertical roots. It's cheaper than buying pot grown trees but if only 1 in 5 is useful it's not so economical.

I put together a hornbeam group using hedging stock recently that I posted on wee trees. I to, had to remove too much root due to the lack of radial roots. A month on I'm still crossing my fingers as to the trees survival. It may have been better to individually pot the trees and gradually reduce the tap root. Still, didn't cost too much and gained some experience.

Yes I think you might be right, I will keep my fingers crossed for both of our groups

This is bare root beech hedging stock after 3 years. I've removed roots that looked ugly but you don't perfect nebari for a group planting.

Yeah seeing yours was actually what inspired me to have a go. I like how you mounded the soil up that really adds to the effect.

This is the problem I had, where the roots were substantial enough I could cut where the red line was but some were very flimsy or had too few roots on the upper root system. And to use the lower root system would mean reverse taper to a comical degree.

This is why I think the plants needed a year or two in a deeper pot to develop that upper root system so that the lower one can be severed. Then I had the problem of wiring a tree into the pot that doesn't really have a rootball or any strong roots to anchor. I thought about screwing them in from the bottom of the plastic pot lol

Hey, well it is growing, some trees look healthier than others. Still touch and go I think really. I'm not too confident lol
