I have a few of these that i'm wondering what to do with . This one is in the ground at my allotment .

The larger trunks have no budding or taper on them , one has a small branch higher up that is budding but compared to the trunk its a twig rather than a branch .
I'm thinking id be better to start again with it and cut all of the trunks off as close to the stump as i can get and use the smaller twigs in the picture as my new tree .

Any thoughts ?

Now they're in the allotment I'd let them establish a good root system this year and do any chopping next year. If you leave them alone there's a good chance they'll bud all over and send up some shoots giving you choices.

You'll perhaps obviously need to decide what you want to achieve - a single trunk or a clump style and chop accordingly.

no idea how high the trunks go or what youre working with as a base/under the soil. im swaying towards a clump style tree with each trunk at differing heights, this is only based on limited info and not having the tree in front of me.

The trunks are about 2ft tall with nothing growing on them .
This is another i have at home in tree pot with a beer can for scale . They are all about this size , maybe a little smaller .

This one i thought could do with trunk chops at different heights .
Will it look right to have a solid trunk with no taper or very little taper ? The winter image will look horrible wouldn't it ?

if you want the trunks to have taper, they will need to be cut back to induce back budding. then reduce accordingly to new offshoots that will become leaders. or you can carve it.

What do they have in terms of nebari?

Carving was my thoughts after seeing some of your projects . The stump in the ground i first posted is what i was thinking of carving .
Lose the two trunks at the front and turn it to the left a little , use the thicker new growth and the two suckers as the new clump with the thicker trunk carved .
From memory i got alot of root with all of the elm i collected .

No idea to be honest as i didnt know what that was when i collected these . I had a small dig at the one in the pot and it seems to spread out under the surface but i noticed i was pulling away some fine roots so stopped looking .

The one i had at home went into a training pot today . Plan is a 5 maybe 7 trunk forest .

I'm thinking about putting a box with no bottom around the stump so i can bring the medium layer up , a ground layer i guess .
All the roots are from the main stump , there is nothing from the smaller ones .

As far as I can see the trunks are straight and taperless but that can be rectified if you follow the cut and regrow like has been suggested. I've just seen an impressive clump that has had a more developed start than yours but don't let that put you off. You've got some well developed bark on yours, I'd like to see two of your clumps together;
