"What happened to Box #1 and #2?" I hear you cry (or not!) - I picked up 5 scruffy looking box plants last year for £20. I gave them all numbers so I could track them individually, so I'll use those to stop myself getting confused. I might post about the others in the future, but atm I think this one is my favourite (not bad for £4 imo!), and 1,2, and 5 are just being let grow for now, they're either going slow, or have been repotted this year.

I think I prefer the top pic as the front. I think the planting angle is about right atm - if I bring it more upright, the branches will be unbalanced and look awful, maybe it could be a bit less upright perhaps? I'm not a fan of rafts. I recently pruned it back to some closer buds for the second time (1st midsummer last year) - it was all quite far from the trunk when I got it. As always, grateful for any advice.

At the moment the trunk is a bit predictable- it arcs it’s way up like a banana.

Assuming the trunk is at the desired thickness, I’d use that first thick branch as the next leader it gives a nice direction change and taper.

You know you're in trouble when you're told you tree looks like a banana. :07hysterical:

Banana was the 2nd thing that came to mind!

None the less, these box both have potential and looking good so far.

Lol!!

Cutting to that first branch seems like it would make it a very square angle, reckon that can still look ok? I know box can take a long time to thicken, so I'm not going to bother going for any more thickness in the trunk itself (unless I need to regrow trunk sections).

Quick and dirty photoshop based on that chop. Were you both thinking of something along these lines?

Hmm now you posted that it does look off balance and a bit too curved...

Yes but with an angle change to bring the apex over the base and a rounder domed silhouette. Less foliage on the right, more on the left and a lower apex
