Do i need to reduce or remove the flowers on my Japanese white pines. This year all of them are covered for some reason. 20180526_162745 by richard borrell, on Flickr 20180526_162801 by richard borrell, on Flickr

Depends what you want the tree to do. If you are looking for growth then no you can leave them. But if you are trying to maintain a compact bonsai then yes, take them off otherwise they will extend the bud much too far. When they come off it will leave a bald area behind. |

Thanks Paul. Taking what you said a stage further , if I want to keep the branch tight do I remove the flowers as soon as I see them appearing ? |

Thanks Paul. Watched the video etc. Will decide where or if to knock off the flower buds. Are everybody's pines covered in flowers? I know that some schools of thought suggest pinching back the shoots later on in the season, are the flowers a result of pinching back too early? |

It's only a small, pedantic, botanist's point, but pines don't have flowers, even though that's what everyone calls them (except me). These 'flowers' are female cones in the making. They are very beautiful lilac-purple colour, and produce clouds of yellow pollen - don't stand down-wind of them! J. |

I remove most of mine (I miss a few sometimes) but it always seems to leave a bald patch which is annoying. |

One silly question. Why some pines produce massive amounts of these flowers and some none? |

No idea. I get them on my white and red pines, not on my scots or blacks. On the whites and reds it seems to vary by year. |

discus wrote: One silly question. Why some pines produce massive amounts of these flowers and some none? I suspect the answer is simply genetic variation combined with environmental conditions. And they aren't flowers, they're female cones. J. |
