Post subject:  What would you put in here?

I found this interesting little container in a charity shop for a couple of pounds and thought it would be fun to grow a tree or two in it. My husband kindly spent a couple of hours and a few drill bits, making some holes in the larger section for me so now I need to have a think about what type / style of tree(s) to put in behind the houses. The semi circle behind the houses is about 7"-8" across.

Any suggestions?

Something tall and skinny perhaps to keep in scale with the houses? It's a really nice idea, will be good to see something unusual like this.

What about a dwarf conifer? Hinoki cypress maybe? Or equally a lonicera or buxus would make a pleasant, but less dramatic backdrop.

A very small leafed cotoneaster, giving you lots of nice flowers then small berries later in the year. Great colour against the buildings

Do you think just one tree or more than one?

What kind of shape are you thinking of, Paul and Keith?

I thought Small-leaved cotoneaster, too... could be cos I've been working on one today!
In my mind, I had the style of a mature park-grown horse chestnut! Set to the left of the scene when viewed from the front.

I love this idea! What about one or two small Buxus sempervirens, I think that would fit in with the scale of the pot. Whatever you decide I applaud your imagination.

Roger.

I like the horse chestnut style idea, Ben.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I wonder what this container was originally intended for ::dunno:

What style are the houses? Do you see them as Mediterranean or eastern?
Something dainty that flowers I think. Serrissa etc.

That's an interesting thought. I initially saw them as French or Tuscan or maybe Italian mountains but I have no knowledge of architecture at all so you could well be right ::dunno:
