Today I started work on one of a few garden centre Chinese Junipers (var. 'Old Gold'), I bought in the sale a couple of months back. The trunk line seemed to suggest a potential cascade to me, and I had a small cascade pot just waiting for a tree - I seem to have more pots than trees! :) ![]() First I opened up the trunk and main branches a little, and removed some of the weaker shoots/branches: ![]() I then wired the lowest branch down: ![]() However, I'm a bit hesitant about where to go next: ![]() With reference to these colour coded cut options, my initial thought was to take out either the orange or yellow branches, then also the light and dark blue. I think this should remove any bar branch possibilities, and give a better taper at the top: ![]() However, on reflection the best result might be the more drastic red cut... Is the red one too drastic? Would the tree likely die? Are there any other possibilities I should consider? In the long term, I'm aiming for something like this: http://www.whitebearbonsai.com/product/14Juniper |

I think the red cut is the correct option for the design long term, the next branch to the left would then become the upright portion of the semi cascade. I also agree that making that cut now would take out too much foliage so would either slowly reduce the sub-branches over a few seasons, or leave it until the tree was strong enough to take the hit in one go. In fact, given the repot, I think it might be wise to let this one recover for this season Consider leaving stubs for jins, |

Yes the red cut gets rid of that straight section nicely and as Darren said the first branch on the cascade could be made your new trunk and apex. Cascade are so difficult to pull off, and removing the red branch completely you would risk the walking stick look. A decent sized Jin might be better than a stub This is going to be a tricky one, the foliage is quite loose, I've not had much luck with my old gold, they seem quite sensitive and do not compact as easily as I had hoped |

The upper branch is probably too thick for the cascading branch so I agree that over a period it would need to go. BTW the pot looks too small if you want to see much thickening / growth. |

Is it just me or are you turning the tree completely the wrong way? If I can rely on 2D pictures (never a good idea) it looks to me as if the trunk you currently plan to cascade down should be up, and the top you are looking at should be down? You'd get a top with a nice short fat trunk and still have a decent cascade? If the roots will allow you to tip it the other way I'd say it's worth a look? |

Not a bad shout there, if it's possible, as it would allow you to keep more of the current foliage. |

Thanks to everyone for their input and help so far... If I were to change the orientation, should it be OK to do this within a few days of the original repot? (i.e. Mon -> Wed) |

It's not a good thing obviously and I wouldn't want to leave it any longer than that but you'll probably get away with it. Just don't change your mind again. |

I'd say a few days is OK as the tree has barely began to heal... Any longer and you are just undoing the healing that has began. I'd say go for it BUT maybe just change the potting angle and leave the wiring for a few weeks at least until it settles again. Maybe late summer? |
