Update and advice please. I have been growing a sacrifice branch on this Mugo (bottom left) whilst trying to get ramification on my keeper branches. At the moment this has resulted in most of the plants vigour going into the sacrifice branch to the detriment of my lovely tiny buds on the keeper branches. I realise that the sacrifice is soon going to create a bulge so I am happy to remove it in the near future. What is the best course of action? Do I risk losing the new buds by keeping the sacrifice? (there is some extension this year on some keepers). My wiring needs improvement I know. Thanks. |

What is your sacrifice for and has it achieved it's purpose? There are a number of choices. 1. It's achieved it's purpose so remove it. 2. Keep it and hope/intend to regrow the finer material later. 3. Reduce it to balance the vigour with the finer material. 4. Remove it and regrow another sacrifice it's becoming too big and you're worried about the wound. You say that you fear losing the inner buds on your keepers so I would suggest reducing or removing the sacrifice. |

It looks like the first whorl has too many branches - sacrifice or not - so some branch selection is due. I agree with Gary If you’re keeping the sacrifice you need to reduce its vigour |

I'd remove all the older needles that grow upwards or downwards. Only keep the needles that grow laterally/horizontally. These are the growth points for new candles and you only want them to develop. If you're happy with the trunk thickening I'd jin the sacrifice branch and seal it's base where it leaves the trunk. |

Would be better without the Jin in my opinion. Not sure if it’s just the picture but the branch in the space above the Jin is very congested? Also the foliage is looking a touch yellow? |
