Hi all
At this time of year most of our trees are wintering and the work load has reduced. However I wanted to share a little colour with you. This is an hibiscus cutting that I took last autumn and I’ve watched it thrive all summer with the heat to a point of flowering. I took the top out and wired it slightly this week. Now I know there will be some who say it’s not good material for bonsai but isn’t it a joy to see such a beautiful flower in October. I will post it’s progress. Has anyone grown a bonsai hibiscus before ?

As I expect you know, it's hardy. The main problem is that they are very slow to leaf up in the spring. So your final aim will be winter image. Once they get established they grow very quickly, and tolerate heavy top pruning and root pruning.

Thanks penny Ann
Yes it’s mother plant (a shrub in my garden) bought from Aldi about 4 years ago is always late to leaf and, flowers now just as the leaves are turning yellow. However I think it’s worth the wait for those beautiful flowers. I’ve fed the cutting with naruko along with the other bonsais and the flowers are much better than the mother plant. Nice to have the late flower when all the others are turning brown

We took a hibiscus out of our nieces garden this year. I am waiting to see if it will survive the winter as it is destined as a bonsai.
