Thanks Sputnik. I'll get myself ready for the spring and get a few done.

Hey Gary! How did your ground growing tridents fair over last winter? All ok? How has their growth been this year?

I have one that's not really a Bonsai as it's in a large-ish garden pot!

Apparently it was much taller than it is now but died back to the bottom two branches so I clipped it over the last six years in to a broom style..

There wasn't a deal of it when I acquired it!!

I was thinking of starting a different style for it by chopping a vee between the two branches and having the right branch as the first then sort out the left side as the next branch and the lead for it to gain some height back!

This was taken after clipping it back to a rounded crown recently..

I'm actually unsure if this is a Buergrianum or a Ginnala as I know that Ginnala have been mistakenly sold as Trident many times, I think the true trident leaves are more like a chalice shaped leaf with a short central lobe

I like it though, It's my chunkey munkey!! :201thumbup:

They all survived but to be honest haven't taken off yet, growth has been limited. I've found with quite a few of my ground trees that they only burst into life in year 2 and then they rocket.

I dug my tridents up this year for some root work and put them back. They didn't grow much at all this year compared to the previous few years.

Ok, thanks guys I’ll give it a go next year then - although I’m still a little nervous as to how well they’ll do up here in Carlisle but nothing ventured....!!

Andy I'd say Carlisle probably has quite harsh weather compared to here in Kent. I keep my TM's under my bench against a south facing wall from when the temperature is low enough for frosts to occur all through to spring BUT it seldom freezes here. If I know a big freeze is coming I'd take more care. I lost one a few years ago when we had a late frost and cold spell and I have no desire to re-learn that lesson.

Talking of chunky Munkeys!
My favourite tree.
By this time next year it should be where I want it to be.
I protect against frosts with fleece and will put in the garage if it goes below -3

Can I ask, when you take cuttings, do you have to use the bit at the end of a branch, or can you make several from one longish branch ?

You can make several from one branch. No need to have the tip. I have taken them throughout the summer.

Checked out my trident cuttings taken when pruning throughout the summer a couple of weeks ago and they had lovely long white roots. Thinking of trying a fusion project. This potful were taken in akadama. I have others taken in moler. They don't seem too fussy.
