If you're simply carving off the dead wood, now would be a good time. There are no leaves so it's easier to access. The question is why have such large areas died back and I imagine it's simply a lack of water. I have one and it stays in a large reservoir of water all the time, it's roots submerged. They are so unlike almost all the other trees we keep for bonsai which need a balance of water and oxygen. Willow just seem to need constant water. I've had die back similar to yours and submerging the roots has stopped it. My tree was out of the reservoir for 3 days a few months ago and I lost 25% of the branches. Kept in the reservoir I get very little die back. |

Cheers. Im not sure about the dieback i only seem to get it where ive made a cut.. its like the trees saying oh you wanted to style that branch well think again mate. My big willows have had dieback from pruning it but heal up nicely and gives it character. I leave my willow trees in a tub of water in the summer to save watering so much but leave it out the rest of the time |

Do you use cut paste when pruning? |
