Not much to show yet, i had this bit of juniper wood i found under a bush for a while.

Then a couple of months ago I saw this juniper whip at £2.

I used a Stanley knife, v shaped burin and Jin pliers to make the groove. And some brass pins and wire to hold it in place.

I made a platform out of scrap timber and screwed the deadwood to it. Am banking on the timber rotting away as the roots fill the gap left by it.

Some nice movement in there. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I had a half-hearted attempt a couple of years ago, but came to the conclusion that it was just as easy to grow a bonsai on its own trunk. Hope you have more success.

Won't you need to treat the deadwood to prevent that rotting too?

These are tempting and fun.

I'd add another 2 - 3 whips in addition to that one and create a sense of a wider live vein and also a secondary live vein with deadwood in between.

You may as well also wire the branches into place now?

Quite nice Sizzla and very neat work too. I have very little knowledge of those but want to try one too. My drift wood will be good for it but I want a long/tall tanuki and haven't find one yet that works. From what I read, it's good to try to start on one side and go on the other side further up.

Thanks for the encouragement, I will lime sulfur the deadwood eventually when I've got a bit more time and it's weathered a bit more, I think I should probably use wood hardener lead the soil line shouldn't I?

I don't think I can source any more of these whips but maybe in the spring I'll look at doing another with more than one plant.

If you are going to the heathrow show you will probably find some young plants. I found some young juniper blauws last year and started a tanuki project. May get another couple this year when I go.
