Hi Experts I have always wanted a Bonsai in my life and i now finally have a place for one. I have a 75cm cube planter in which i will put the bonsai and its pot (on blocks) and surround with low level colourful plants. I think this will look nice. The planter is on my drive, close to house and is in shade. I want evergreen and i intend it to be around 75cm-1m tall in time. I am a fairly good gardener so im happy to put the time n effort into it. I like the Japanese look of Acers but they always look wind burned so this puts me off and ive been looking at evergreen Oaks...Holm Oak. I want a thick short trunk. All advice is welcome Thanks |

Bonsai are prone to getting stolen so I'd think twice about locating it in full view and easy public access. |

Yup I've had four sticks in pots stolen from my back garden, thieves see a bonsai pot and get dollar signs in their eyes regardless of the quality or stage of development |

Im sure that will be OK, I live in a good area and it wont be seen from the road plus i intend the pot to be sunk into the cube planter. |

Yew might be a good choice if it's going to be in shade, not the easiest though, slow to grow and develop, might not be a meter tall for many years. Most trees need full sun for the majority of the day. I have seen cloud pruned cypress, buxus and ilex crenata in garden centres if that would be a suitable candidate instead of an actual bonsai. |

You should be able to get a big Chinese Elm for under £400. It'll be easy to hack into shape and keep alive. |
