This afternoon, on the way home, I called into a garden centre that I don't usually use, with the intention of looking for a certain plant but certainly no trees. Walking past the Japanese Maples I spotted a small one that had great trunk movement, although not shown to its best in the photo's. Well I just had to stop and look. It had been over watered and was being sold as a patio maple, in a pot that clearly it was being blown out of. Deciding to be cheeky I asked if it was going to be reduced because.....etc, etc. In the end he agreed I could have it for half price, £12.99. As you can see it has three branches that will have to be reduced to one or two, shown best in photo's two and three. Any thoughts are most welcome. Tomorrow I am going to clean the surface and plant the whole tree ball in a pot of very free draining mix until spring. It's been very healthy in its past, should be recoverable. |

Price reductions are good. Best of luck with this. |

It also has no visible nasty grafting point. Good find. |

I cleaned up the surface soil this morning without removing too much. At the moment there is no interesting nebari but I'm hoping one 'might' appear when I bare root in spring.I also gave it a bit of a chop before putting it in a larger temporary container (sorry Gary but its blue). Its now sit tight till spring. IMG_20181024_134333 by Keith Hansell, on Flickr IMG_20181024_134305 by Keith Hansell, on Flickr

Good find. I lost one like this and I think it was because I did not first apply a good fungicide and then seal the cuts. It developed a black fungus over the winter, barely woke up and died. Your's is worth taking the extra precaution over? |

I sealed the cuts after giving it a trim but not a spray so I'll do that tomorrow. |

The blackening of the cambium in maples is often caused by a bacteria rather than a fungus, Pseudomonas Syringae. According to the research I've read it is paradoxically an ice crystallization infection and often occurs in Winter by entering via damaged bark or pruning sites. Sealing is a very good idea. |
