Question if i may ? Why are you removing the apex right in the middle of reverse taper ?
I would think about cutting just above the four branches just lower down , maybe under them ?

@Paul @Darren I didn't think larch could be air layered? Or did I imagine that?

Mainly because the branch there is already growing upwards. The ones lower down are sticking out at 90 degrees and look as if they would be difficult to bring upwards in a smooth way. That is why I was wondering if there was a way to reduce the bulge by cutting a wedge at the back.

Interesting. That might be worth a try.

This is, of course, no longer my tree! But I must say I think the air-layer idea
is well worth trying. What happens if it doesn't work? You just lose a bit off the
apex, and surely that coul be fairly easily dealt with over the next 2-3 years?

Go on! Have a go!

Thanks for your encouragement and approval, John. :smallthumb: I shall spend a good while looking at it between now and spring time then make a decision about what is the best plan. I need to do more research about air layers on larch too.

Well, exactly a year later and what have I done? Absolutely nothing ! :07hysterical: I never was one to rush my trees!

I did a bit of wiring and pruning over the summer months and took it to a club workshop evening on Wednesday. There were a variety of suggestions (and I do find it so annoying when certain members assume I know absolutely nothing and start telling me what to do, including absolute basics about how to look for buds when pruning! Try just asking me first :120ranting: )

Anyway, I am still thinking that an attempt to air layer the top off is the way forward so that will be the plan in the Spring. Once that is done I can look at the new apex. There was one quite creative suggestion about making a lightning strike deadwood feature at the top which I quite liked. I'll see if I can do a virt to get your thoughts..
