I would go ahead and try it, John. You've nothing to lose because that right hand branch needs to come off anyway.
I think my early mistake which greatly reduced it's chances (from poor to highly unlikely), was that I was over cautious about keeping the sphagnum damp and in fact I made it too wet. I tried to remedy that by opening the top of the wrap and absorbing some of the excess moisture out with paper towels but I think that probably disrupted the process even more.

At least you have the advantage of a good length of easy to get at branch to cut the layer nice and cleanly and get the wrap around securely.

Have you had success with layering other species?

I've never tried an air layer before!, my claim to fame (To me at least!) is getting a Deshojo Maple cutting to root, I'm told they're quite difficult to do, I got one out of twenty four to take so maybe not such a great feat after all!!

I've been going to have a go at the Larch since last year, I think it may be a little too late now so as soon as the needles harden off next year, I'll go for it!!

By the way, I have a group planbting of Zelkova on tufa rock, Over the last seven years i've lost a couple of trees so I took cuttings a few weeks ago, I put four in to a tray and three lots of three in to plant post with cut off 2 litre bottles acting as greenhouses, There's at least six that have new growth on them already!! :201thumbup:

I bought some Zelkova seeds off fleabay, Not a single one popped up!!

Update

Having waited ages for the last needles to drop and the second lockdown restrictions to be lifted, I finally booked a slot at the Bonsai Shed to work on this larch with Andy Barber. The ugly top has been removed and the branches thinned and positioned ready for next year’s growth season. Still more work to do in the future to develop the look of the jinned and shari-ed apex.

I read that before I embarked on this, Paul, but it was impossible to get a wrap round the trunk at that point. But as much as anything else I was sabotaged by the ridiculously hot and dry weather and I think I over-compensated by adding too much water to the sphagnum ball. Combine that with a generous dose of inexperience and the result was a failure ::dunno:

No, I went a couple of months ago but it is all looking much more 'bedded in' now, especially the pond which looks fabulous. While I was there Mark and Ming from UKBA popped in which was nice. Had a good catch up with them about trees and life!

Spring 2021 UPDATE

I have been putting off repotting this tree because it is big and heavy and felt slightly daunting but I decided to have a go today. It must have been in the pot for quite a few years so needed to be done.

What a pleasant surprise. John had planted the tree with an upturned terracotta pot underneath it which had very effectively prevented downward root growth and the tree had plenty of radial roots. The soil came away easily and as the root ball was much smaller than I expected, I was able to repot it into a smaller shallower pot. I had a plastic training pot that was the right size for now and I will look for a proper pot for it over the next year or so.

Very pleased with the result.
