Thank you, David and Bluesky. I am pleased with how it is developing and I’m looking forward to some good branch development this year to fill in some of the gaps.

It is at that point where it becomes a proper bonsai. Can't wait to see the pot selection.

Any suggestions for pot style, shape and colour, Brendan?

A nice light grey Walsall. The branches need wire and pulling down, check out pictures of larch in the wild.

Thanks, Paul, nice suggestion about a grey pot.
As for the branches, persuading them to go down and STAY down is a work in progress. It had been wired since autumn but I have just taken them off because I didn’t want them to cut in. I will re do it (again) later in the year.

HI

If you want to pull a branch down with less risk of scarring, why not use guy wire?

That’s what I did last year, Keith....

As I said, it’s a work in progress

I heavily wired mine in a November, then the wire stayed on for nearly 2 years, [checked regularly for any biting in] A lot depends on the age of tree and how mature the bark is then wire marking becomes less of a problem.

As well as the wiring of branches, I pulled a small bit of the wire out at a suitable location and used guy wires to hold the branch in place. Larch are terrible for springing back once they are released from the wire.......... so if needs be re wire again to ensure the branch doesn't get the chance to move back before you re wire it. Should be easy to do as a lot of the buds haven't opened yet. Doing them later this year will be too late.
Take your time and when you wind the wire around the branch try and miss the buds.

A guy wire on its own with these larch won't give enough hold on the branch to allow it to stay in the position that you want it.

So get cracking and use a heavier wire than you usually would............ :132doh: :27drunk.

Also, I noticed, don't just pull the ends of the branches down otherwise you are left with a kink near the trunk. When you start to put the wire on the branch go over the top very close to the trunk and make a smaller loop around the branch so the wire is closer than you would normally do, spacing can be bigger further along the branch. Then you should be able to bend at the trunk or very close to it while the branch isn't too big. Maybe use 2 pairs of jin pliers to hold the wire to get a better bit of force on the branch. If the branch is too big to move, you can draw a saw under the branch next to the trunk to help you bend the branch down..... then seal the wound and it will repair. If that doesn't make sense, I will ty and draw something
