(He had already chopped it and got rid of most of the rootball )

Of course I said "thanks mate worth a shot"
Not being ungrateful I love receiving materal from people but at the right time of year would be good!!

How much of the rootball survived? Any "before" pics?

I hope it survives. Keep it protected from frost this winter.

Might be worth giving it a drench of Rhizotonic?

If it's going to survive, it needs to be kept totally still in its pot for a couple of years. If you can, try to tie it into the pot. Even a pigeon landing on it could kill it if the roots are dodgy.
As for Rhizotonic, it won't be absorbed and used by the tree as it has been given a forced dormancy. The trunk looks well developed and will be carrying quite a lot of energy, so be aware that if you are lucky enough to get any growth in the new year it still might not have survived. I wouldn't count your chickens until you get a second flush of growth.

Agreed. Total stability and humidity are the requirements now. Growth for the next two years will show it's survived. I collected two last winter. One grew this year and the other didn't make it. I'm still fingers crossed on the first one for next year. Best of luck with yours.

i would put this in the ground until it recovers.. it could be two years or more... the teperature is much more stable beneath the ground which will aid recovery of the roots and prevent them from freezing... any oak i collect gets this treatment

That makes sense but do you do anything to restrict or manage the roots ? Otherwise you end up "collecting" a second time.

i just plant in john innes compost in a big hole which makes digging back up realitivly simple with minimal root ball disturbance....this tree however wont be growing many roots untill it has lots of leaves ...i think it is 50/50 if it survive or not...

I am in a similar situation than you. Roots had growth hormones sprinkled and then it was replanted in a huge pot full of cat litter with added Rhizotonic. It's in the greenhouse until Spring. Fingers crossed... Good luck to us!
