Post subject:  Dying Yew ?

Hi all.
Can anybody give me advice about saving this tree.
I was told I could have it as it was in the garden of a derelict house. I cut a circle around it in the summer but a few weeks ago was told the digger was coming the next day to clear the site. I dug it up as best I could. I planted it straight away in an old bee hive lid. There were quite a few fine roots under the trunk. It had been growing under lots of bigger trees and had a thin trunk reaching for the light, which I had to cut off, but I loved the wide base.
All seemed well but now the few leaves it had have died.
Do you think it will grow in the spring? Should I plant it in the ground or put it in the cold greenhouse with some bottom heat?
Or is it too late?
I tried to use photobucket but it kept asking me to change my password and wouldn't let me upload.
Thanks in advance.
John

I think it's probably died. Your evergreen is now everbrown. Yew's seem to hate their roots being messed with and I think this was just too much for this tree. I'd put it the cold greenhouse over winter and makes sure it's not in soggy soil (that killed one of mine). In the spring you'll either see a miracle or decide it's dead and put it in the bin.

Thanks Gary, was worried that would be the answer.
I read about an over root pruned Cedar recovering with bottom heat. Do you think there is any point in trying?
Cheers

I've never used bottom heat to help root formation but I've also read it's very helpful, as root growth requires a basic minimum temperature. You can always try but my suspicion is that you're hoping for resurrection rather than recovery.

 Might try asking the local minister then.
Thanks.

Yew don't like being moved in winter, and they like root disturbance even less.

Try the bottom heat as that's a nice trunk, but don't expect much.

A quick update.
I didn't bother with bottom heat, I just left it in the greenhouse. A chap I work with who studied horticulture and worked as a gardener said it would be fine in the spring. I had my doubts but he was right. Every branch that had leaves before has formed buds and they have all opened. It's not a lot of foliage at all but a start. I will leave it alone this year and see how it goes.
Cheers
