Bought some trees mid summer, a few juniper and a few maples, all from the same supplier.

Now whilst i was there, i couldnt help but notice the Juniper where a little on the pale side, but still looked healthy enough with new shoots appearing.

When i got them home, next to mine, did look rather more aneamic then they did when i bought them lol

The gent i bought them from fed them, looked after them well. so he said.

No sign of any pests or disease.

I cant help a wondering, and this thought keeps swirling around, is it the cat litter they are planted in ?

Do some trees not tolerate it ?

Maybe the dry summer?, not sure, mine are green enough

Cant help but look forward to spring for a change of soil, but maybe im wrong.

Best, Sean

A picture would help if you've got one.

Have you checked to see if they are potbound?

What kind of cat litter - Tesco or Sanicat? The latter tends to hold a lot more water than the former. Never had a problem growing junis in pure sanicat.

I've found Tesco holds more water than sanicat, depending on the size and shape of the pot adding another ingredient to decrease or increase the amount of water held might be needed. Conifers dislike holding too much water.

Funnily enough, no. I should have and will later.

The pot looks on the big side for the tree, but decieving, as its a very shallow pot.

You make a good point.

Hard to keep track sometimes when you not had them long.

Cheers

I dont use cat litter, not because i dont like it, i just dont know much about it.

I buy pre-mixed, a general purpose, and one especially formulated for conifers with a formula that holds sufficent moisture. The guys i get it off know a lot more than me, so i find it easier that way.

I think with the dry summer, shallow pot, (possibilty of potbound, i will see), the tree didnt have sufficient water.

It was fed liquid fertilizer, perhaps an issue too, maybe.

It can be tricky getting new trees in, after a while though, you know where you are with them.

Will check roots later, and take it from there.

Thanks all for your assistance, appreciated
