Who knew that Morrisons £5 bonsai trees would provide so much pleasure and entertainment! Those of you who use some of the bonsai Facebook groups will have seen the numerous posts about these little trees, and there is a particularly funny one on Bonsai UK at the moment.

I think the trees are great value and I have bought 3 Chinese Elms. They were in need for some tlc as you can imagine, due to the rubbish soil and pots that they are in, and I'm sure many will be bought by inexperienced growers and will be dead in no time. But, for those willing to do a bit of research or who already know a bit about tree care, I think they are a good buy.

Here are my three as bought...

Nice one. At £5 what's to lose.

£15 well spent.

Why are you keeping that flying root on the tree on the far left?

Because right now in the roots department it needs all the help it can get!! Plenty of time to deal with that later when everything underground is looking a bit healthier :smallthumb:

I had managed to resist the the Morrisons temptation until last night, when the grapevine announced that they were now reduced. We don't have a Morrisons near us, so it was a case of getting a map out (I'm old fashioned, I much prefer a good OS map to sat nav). As it was a horrible day, it was a good excuse to go. I was so disappointed, not only were they not reduced, they were totally uninspiring as well, so I left empty handed. We'd passed a garden centre en-route, so called in for coffee. It seems it had been a pricey Wyevale garden centre until a few weeks ago, now it's a super cheap In -Excess one. They are selling off all the Wyevale stock at rock bottom prices. I got six little trees, all around 4 to 6 inches high in two litre pots for£16. I also wanted some primrose bedding plants and they had six packs for £2.50, rather than £9 that Wyevale were selling them for.

It sounds as though you got a result too!

I meant to identify the trees, but the internet decided to play up.
Berber is
Potentilla
Forsythia
Ceoanthus(this is destined for the garden)
Cotoneaster
I want them all to be Mame/Shohin, which is why they appealed to me.

I bought a couple of Chinese Elms in Morrisons only last week too and if they still have some when I pop in again on Thursday, I shall treat myself to a couple more I think... Funnily enough, one of my favourite trees is an Elm that I bought in Safeways nearly twenty years ago, before Morrisons bought them out. ... This was it when I photographed it last spring, some twenty years later and now standing at well over two feet tall.... :201thumbup:

That's lovely, Mike! Just shows what can be done with a bit of knowledge and patience.

Has anyone else bought any Morrisons trees recently?
