I was able to collect some Japanese maple seeds last autumn from several different trees growing in a nearby street. I looked on The Maple Man website, which advised that the seed needed 100 days in the fridge, and that they would start to sprout while still in the fridge. So I was delighted that when I looked at the jam jar of seeds mixed with sand has got sprouting seeds. The 100 days is up next weekend, so I'll wait another week before I sow them. For any one who hasn't looked at The Maple man, he's a great source of seeds, seedlings and trees. |

Sowing them fresh in Autumn and then leaving them exposed to frost over Winter works really well and avoids the hassle of having seeds in your fridge. Just make sure you put a mesh sheet over the tray to protect against critters stealing seeds. |

I have just done some in the fridge, placed on damp old sphagnum moss left over from air layers last year and put into a seal up sandwich bag. Placed in the top of the fridge and left for about 6/8 weeks. They have now been potted on and doing well in my unheated greenhouse. |

Penny Ann, when I saw that this thread was on the Challenge Thread I thought you were going to start up a new weetrees challenge. Worth a try ? |

No, I accidently put it on the wrong page, and don't know how to shift it. Could be an interesting challenge, though I think we might need more than two years if you started from seed sowing. I've sown about a hundred seeds. Some left outside, others in the fridge and the rest in the greenhouse. So far four have germinated from the fridge ones but nothing so far from the rest. |

Now that's a challenge - growing from seed. 2020 to 2035 I reckon - a fifteen year challenge. |
