Any one else on maple watch lol,I am checking mine every day (well the ones in refinement)
The tweezers with the cutting edges make it easier.

What are you waiting for? I assume it's to nip out the first buds. ?

yes its been a mild winter, mine are moving, hawthorns almost in leaf. we will get a little cold weather yet, but if you have stuff in shelter not much to worry about really.

Only applies to trees in the refinement stage. If you miss the critical period, you get longer internodes than you'd want.

Does this technique apply to all maples ie. Field and trident?

I use it on field maples as well as Acer palmatum. I don't have any tridents.
Again this is only useful for mature, developed trees in the refinement stage.

If anyone could clarify the effectiveness of this technique for tridents that would be great. Care of trees in their refinement stage is a weakness of mine as so few have yet to reach it.

Jake, the trident i sold you is far from the refinement stage, my advice would be just to let it grow out and cut back mid to late season then let grow again and look at it end of summer.
