I'm thinking of buying this trident from my nearest bonsai nursery. Recently imported from Japan. The biro is included for free ;)

I love the trunk base.

Please tell me your opinion!

Maybe I can get a second tree by thread layering somewhere on the upright straight section of trunk.

How much do you think this would sell for in a UK bonsai nursery?

Ha I would recognise that biro anywhere.
I like your idea of layering it to get 2 shohin sized trees.
A lovely tree with great potential I think, yes the base is superb.
And at a very good price imo.

Thanks Gary. I think I will buy it.
I will let it do its thing for one season before deciding on a layer.

The Miyusomi variant has these leaves which somehow remind me of ducks feet!

Are they not leaves from a paper bark maple ?

I'm no expert but I think paperbark leaves come in groups of three, and more lobes on each leaf. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_griseum - can see why they're called paperbark ...

Here is another pic of miyasama leaves:

And when mine produces leaves I'll share a photo.

This is how it looks now:

It's nice and healthy, but, I'm having difficulty thinking how to make this look more like a tree and less like a shrub!

Having too many branches is a good problem to have - according to Walter Pall :)

Yes, makes sense.

I previously thought about air layering it to get two shohins but now it's in full leaf I don't think either of the two smaller trees would be any nearer to a natural tree image so I'd just have twice the problem.

maybe it needs a branch on the right and some negative space in there.

Something like this maybe... still having difficulty visualising it like a large tree though.

Reminds me a little of the trident i bought although your lower branch is a lower trunk . Try creating some space by getting the lower branches out and less up ?
