Very few plants enjoy being inside for long periods. Crassula ( jade plants), and ficus are perhaps the most tolerant. If you have very sunny windowsills you get more options. If you can put things on an outside windowsill, or have a window box you can grow most trees, but look for shade loving or tender plants.

Thanks, well hopefully ill receive the keys for my house soon so will be able to take advantage of the garden ill get with it! I have my first bonsai which is a chinese elm which seems to be doing well at the moment indoors but will definitely spend alot of time outside in the spring/ summer months before bringing it back in for the colder months, does this sound okay?

Hi and welcome.
Chinese elm do best when kept outside all year round. They don't need mollycoddling. Mine stay out all the time and I live in Leeds which can be cold and windy. I may put them in a cold greenhouse if temperatures drop lower than 8c for any. Length of time.

As soon as i get my keys to my forst house. The tree will be going in the garden. Ive seen a few ideas of other peoples bonsai areas on here so i want to build a platform for the trees to go on at a height i can see them and work if needs be. Hopefully the tree will hang on till then. When i boight the tree it said ‘indoor’ which the more research i do and the more i think logically it isnt an indoor tree. I just need to keep it going for a few more weeks.. if nothing else though the tree has got me into bonsai which at 25 doesnt seem to popular but i enjoy it!

All trees grow outside some need winter protection because they came originally from a different temperate zone to ours

Brad, good to hear you're enjoying it at 25, you've been bitten by the bonsai bug and it's very addictive! You're in good company here.

My advice for your elm is the same as Bonsaimax in another thread.. let those lowest two or three branches grow wildly big for a year or two to fatten up the lower part of the trunk. So, during that time it might look odd with unwieldy branches growing out of it, but in the long run it has great benefits for your tree. And looks better.

One thing to consider about winter peotection is, the smaller the tree and pot, the more susceptible it will be to severe weather conditions.

Good luck in your new house! I bet you'll have several more wee trees growing there before summer. You won't regret it!

It'll be fine for a few weeks unless something drastic happens. The first sign of problems would be extremely leggy growth but for a few weeks it's no problem. They get sold as "indoor" because that encourages people to buy them. I did, and it got me into the hobby even though the first lesson I learnt was to put it outside.

Hi brad. I hail from the same neck of the woods as you. but now live in Norwich. Where do you recommend for little trees and bits, local to you?. I'm back up there in a couple of weeks visiting family, and always like to see what's around whenever i get the chance.

(Ex Thornham and Balderstone btw!)
