Today I checked the Acer palmatum seeds I collected in October 2019 which I had been overwintering in the back of my fridge. I was pleased to find they have all germinated, so I have pricked them out into trays to grow on. I plan to plant the best of them in the ground to thicken up for a few years when they're a bit larger.
I also have about 60 Crab apples from 3 varieties , plus a few Laburnum and Damson all germinating after a winter in the fridge, so it looks like I may have a few more trees to play with by the time I retire!!

just an update on my trials with various locations i outlined earlier.

a quick search has revealed that the three pots receiving different amounts of sun/warmth have all produced, so far one seedling each. however the seeds scattered on the shingle, three up so far.the shingle, i should add gets little, if any direct light from the sun.

a bit too early to draw any conclusions yet, but i will keep checking.

We are now well into may, and so far, as was entirely expected, nothing at all from the stratified seeds.

The three containers i posted around the garden have all returned pretty similar results, i have lost a few to pigeons etc, but am left with around 40 perfectly good seedlings.I am still keeping them well shaded. So it looks like the position of the containers with regards to sun exposure had little if any effect on the germination rate.

The other trees, which i took no seed from have as usual, produced quite a few young 'uns in the shingle, but most of those have been slug/bird food tbh, and i think i have enough to be going on with for now!
