does anyone not feed their trees or leave root bound to get smaller leaves and short internodes? |

I don't fertilise maples until the first set of leaves have hardened off. Same for pines that are in the refinement stage. |

I am not feeding yet either, and even so most of my trees are running mad with long internodes. I have almost only deciduous trees. |

I wish I hadn't fertilised my field maples. They all have massive extensions and long internodes. As Tom says, for trees in refinement, especially maples and pines the standard advice is not to fertilise until a bit later in the year. |

I feed every thing, and I allow every thing to get pot bound. |

I used to have four different approaches: just water, water and three different chemical fertilizer, depending on the species/time of the year/purpose. This year, I am taking an easier approach: feed strongly in Spring, mildly in the summer and maybe a fruit tree specific feed near autumn. |
