Hi can anybody give me advice on defoliating red maples. I believe the red varieties should not be defoliated as they are the weaker ones??. I usually defoliate my other maples mid summer. Leaf cutting maybe ? Any advice would be great as I can't find much online only one article that says not to defoliate . Thanks in advance |

I don’t defoliate my Deshojo or my Beni Maiko Wendy. |

I've only got them in development but they are definitely weaker (reduced photosynthesis) which is why defoliation is not recommended. My thoughts are that you could remove half the leaves to boost air and light to the inner buds or alternatively prune back in early summer if they've over extended. |

I'm not planning on defoliating my deshojos but I will definitely thin out the leaves soon to get more light to the inner branches. The lovely red is already starting to give way to a greeny-red from not enough light I think. |
