It's certainly worth a go. If you're planning on a trunk chop below the big Y, why not do an air layer and get a second tree for free.. twin trunk at that. Either way you'd need to wait until winter to chop...

RHS describes it as a compact shrub amongst other attributes.

At the moment I think I would like to go above the Y, rather than go for a smaller tree.

BOBBY...how long has that Acer been in that pot and at what point did you do the chop?

Still raining here so still no chance of me taking any photo's. If it doesn't stop I'll start building an ark with it.

tbh that might not even be the best solution. hard to tell if it will 'look' right from these images.

Took some photo's but these two were the only ones that show its lines/problems.

As you can see I have put it in a large pot for this year. Also you will notice that I have removed some growth. Maybe I'm pussy footing with it but I didn't want to remove too much straight away. I will give it another visit in mid summer. The straight branch on the right will need to go and I might be able to use the branch below that is moving to the right. The top branch on the left has already had a chop but obviously needs some more.

Here's a closer look at those branches, viewed from the other side. the straighter one to the left will possibly go, although it has the better top. As already mentioned the one to the right needs working and you can see the bottom branches to the left and the need for the middle one to be removed.

ah ok, yep from here it looks like the proportions would be a little 'off' if you kept the height/fork. might look different when its front of you.

That could well be how it goes after I have done the summer chop but we will see.

Just a quick update. I put this into a training pot last week and here's a photo of it this morning, in its spring colour..

Good job choosing the upper trunk chop. This tree is going to become really impressive. Keep us posted over the coming years please.

Thanks guys, I'm happy with it. Next summer I will place it in a slightly shadier spot as most of the growth took place at the back, away from the sun. This year was its first root reduction so hopefully next year it will be settled into the pot and put on more growth.
