Hello folks

This elm was dug up five or six weeks ago just as the buds were starting to peek. It's approximately 100mm diameter at the base, the trunk's chopped at around 600mm. There was a reasonable amount of root including some feeder roots near the trunk.

It's in Sanicat pink now. It's in the shadow of a wall in a fairly sunny garden, some leaves might get a few minutes of direct sunlight at this time of year. The buds are extending normally and new ones are forming on the trunk. The leaves were typically dark green to begin with but now it all looks a bit jaundiced so I'm looking for advice.

I did give it a water with a half-strength general fertiliser a week ago, then panicked a day later because I couldn't remember how yellow and burned the leaf edges were before I'd done it! I gave it a couple of full watering cans to see if I could flush the fertiliser (or at least flush it from my mind).

How soon after root disturbance I can feed it? I've chucked some comfrey on top of it for now but that feels pretty homeopathic. What about spraying the foliage instead?

Thanks

Looks ok to me, no cause for real concern. I’d fertilise but other people may differ. Just don’t over water.

One thing though, that’s not an elm, it’s hazel in my opinion.

The shaped leaf has similarities to Dutch elm or wych elm. Personally I would be keeping it watered but not soaked and I wouldn't be feeding it till it showed a bit of vitality. Omo.

Pale leaves are usually a sign of weakness and often root damage caused by a lack of oxygen to the roots (i.e. too much water). It can also be nutrient deficiency. Proper care and moderate sunlight will usually caused a darker colour to emerge. I wouldn't fertilise until there's good growth.

Nice trunk!

Spraying some of the leaves with dilute fertiliser won't make an ailing tree recover, but it might show you if the problem is due to lack of a particular element. Personally I wouldn't bother, if it's still producing new buds, those leaves are still easily green enough to photosynthesize. Good luck!

Looks like an Elm to me. An easy way to tell is that Elms tend to have rough surfaces to their leaves. A bit like sandpaper.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try watering it a little less, when we had a few days of nice weather I did get into a habit.

Thanks :) If all goes well this season I'll take some more photos and come back looking for design ideas. I'd originally thought about making it into a stump with a low V cut dipping into the scar you see. But the longer I look at it the more I like it the trunk above it, even though there's a little inverse taper at the rolling edge of the top of that scar.
