I seem to remember that a few years back, most gdn. centres stocked 'indoor' bonsai starters, in little pots, usually a single stemmed seedling about 3-4 inches high, for a couple of quid. Lots of different species. They seem to have vanished, it wasn't just the one place that had them either, they were in just about every centre i visited for several years, i bought quite a few and built up a fair selection of 'indoor' species. For some reason i seem to remember that came from a nursery up near preston? Is there anywhere that still sell similar?, i appreciate that a few years have passed so they won't be 1.99 or whatever they cost then!.But i fancy dipping my toe back in to that pool, the beauty of them was that at that price i wasn't frightened to experiment, most of which failed btw!!. |

Yes, they sometimes have them in our local garden centre. Not only indoor species, but outdoors also. I have had Larch, Maple, Zelkova and various others. I find they will get a batch of stock from a Bonsai supplier in the spring and then sell out and not replace until the following spring. |

Thanks Nick that's interesting. May i ask where you are in the country?.I have done online searches, but can't turn up anything, it's a shame as it is probably how quite a few people started in bonsai, for a couple of quid, what have you got to lose?. |

I've not seen that myself in garden centres (although hedging packs are great) but some bonsai nurseries sell individual seedlings as will general tree nurseries. In my past I've just about bought one or more of each of these common species. From our sponsors try https://www.bonsai.co.uk/bonsai-seedlings/ or herons https://www.herons.co.uk/Starter-Bonsai-Trees/ |

When you say up near Preston do you mean Barton Grange? I was in there a few weeks ago and they had a few trees in the indoor plant section, can't remember exactly what though, and as you can imagine, in a place like that they're definitely not £1.99. |

My local GC is Bents between Leigh and Warrington. I seem to recall a stand labelled 'Kyoto Bonsai' a couple years back. Kyoto is a wholesale supplier not open to the public. They must supply all sorts of material to the trade. |

Bents is about twenty minutes down the road from me, I've not been since they turned it into a little shopping village though. Is it a happy hunting ground, I always remember it as an expensive 'lifestyle' type of garden centre? |

I found a pot of young ficus benjamina at my local Dobbies last year - they aren’t anything special but they’re good for experimenting with! |

Its worth visiting now and again just to see what stuff they got. They seem to renew their stock regularly. In the last few years I got Blauuws Juniper, Procumbens nana, a Nothofagus, and several of those starter trees. |
