Does anyone have any experience of developing pot roses into bonsai styles?

I have been given a little 4" nursery pot with 3 roses in it, not much bigger than cuttings. I have also seen pictures of rose bonsai in simple single stem, semi cascade styles. But I would like to know how I get from one to the other ::dunno:

The pot roses currently look healthy and have flowers and buds on them. Should I leave them as they are until autumn or spring when roses would normally be bare-rooted and moved? Or can I pot them individually now and get some wire on them while the stems are still relatively soft? And what about pruning? Treat them like any other tree and prune for style and ramification?

I have three so I can try three different methods so I'm interested to hear other people's experiences.

THe only ones I have seen are really old woody roses. If you are starting with small stuff I guess the usual points about ground growing etc apply?

Roses do make nice bonsai, though. Especially if you can find an old pot grown one with really gnarly woody stem.

Good point, Brendan, but I think in this case I just have to work with what I've got. It would take many years to turn these little cuttings into something old and gnarly!

Daryl, you have to plant them in the ground and wait 20 years.............. :07hysterical: :07hysterical: :132doh:

A lot of those that are shown are old stumps and then growth is taken off them and brought on and styled into a tree shape. Most are kept small and clump style. Treat them like you would any small tree............ but carefully cause of the thorns :32crazy:

I have several on the go, including some very small leafed Japanese Rose that originally came back from Japan with one of our members

In general horticulture, Roses don't seem to mind being root balled and moved mid season, I've moved about 5 in summer and not lost one and that included a few days in a bin bag.

I don't know much about roses (I only have one I'm working on) but I understand they don't react well to wiring, so that is something to consider.
GaryJC has some nice little Japanese ones that you might have seen in his display at Expo.
