Morning. Had this for a few years now and was just wondering if anyone can offer some advice. I was hoping for a bit of back budding but not had much joy. Does this have potential or is it too bare? https://ibb.co/ZNNtwdP |

What's your pruning routine? If find pines back bud best when left to grow strong. |

Hi Gary, I'm still very new to all this so I don't have a routine as such other than feed it during the summer months. I was hoping nature would do the rest. Any advice would be much appreciated. |

Here's an existing thread on the subject that should help: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16426&p=200077#p200075 |

Cheers Ben, I'll give that a read and hopefully it will make sense. I'll post a few close up pictures to show you what stage I am at now in terms of candle growth and most likely ask a few more questions. Thanks |

Ok having read that post it seems as though I have to leave the candles to do their thing for a number of months yet. Some of them are quite large already: https://ibb.co/xJtFDch https://ibb.co/ZfWzXbr https://ibb.co/nbvYBCm Can anymore tell me what kind of pine it is too? |

Looks like a Scots. Read Paul’s post on that thread where he’s talking about thinning and whorls (near the end). |

Yeah I read that bit too but I think I've missed the boat to do anything about that now? |

tcmorris78 wrote: Yeah I read that bit too but I think I've missed the boat to do anything about that now? Nature won't take care of a tree and turn it into a bonsai - you have to intervene. To get anything worthwhile out of this will entail probably 5-7 years if you're lucky, gradually reducing the top and using the bottom branch only. It will entail a repot too into better substrate and resiting it away from the shed if that is where it is normally kept. If you are not able to do these then it's best kept as a patio pine. Pines are one of the worst trees to choose for a beginner - they have to be managed correctly and can't be chopped and started again. |
