Hello all. Whilst away my Japanese maple wasn't watered by my parents and when i returned and watered it, it hasn't recovered. The leaves are in the process of dropping and all dried out and crispy. A little like they would be in October. It has once done this before after a root trim and repotting but it did manage to rebud in the same season.

In this case, how might i give it the best chance or rebudding and being ok? Should i trim back the dying leaves now? Should i water or leave dry? Why about feeding?

It has been well watered 5 days ago and not recovering. We've also had heavy rain the last two days.

all you can do is wait and hope .. it may well push out some new shoots when the leaves fall off

My advice, as long as you have good drainage in the pot keep watering, if you are lucky it should re bud. Bes of luck.

Yes, keep watering it, and don't feed it at all until it is totally healthy again. And I think it has a better chance of recovery now than say July or August.

How long did it go without watering?

If t is going to recover it will take a couple of weeks. In the mean time keep it shaded and damp

Fingers crossed. Maples are prone to this especially the weaker ones. I would remove all the dead leaves as well. Mostly because it's tidier but it does let light and air into any new buds that might pop.
