Daryl, you’re such a risk taker!!!

And, in a different post, you're the one who said tweezers are one of your main bonsai tools! :07hysterical:

The two are not mutually exclusive, Loufada. I have always used my tweezers for weeds but on the one or two occasions when I have been less diligent and ended up with a carpet of this weed, then I have used a paintbrush and contact weedkiller. I really don't see the problem ::dunno:

Use it at your peril!! In such small containers with zero clay and organic matter to buffer there is always a risk with herbicide cross-contamination through bark or surface and shallow roots even with so called contact weedkillers.
Paraquat was said to be safe when they first introduced it.....
Only a few years ago Monsanto Chemicals would have us believe that Glyphosate was safe enough to drink - funny how now the have discovered possible links to cancer there is now a push to have it banned all over Europe.............!

Prevents water getting to tree roots once it gets too thick, robs nutrients, clogs drainage.

Like most weeds the roots are the problem. These things are like icebergs, little showing on top but they send out masses of fine deep roots, which can soon fill the pot.

You did not show us the rest of the tree but if this one can handle a repotting without removing any of its soil then repot it.

Then when you do repot it then remove all of the soil with weeds in, together with all of the weeds' roots. Obviously you don't re-use the weedy soil.

And as Paul said, free draining soil and especially moler clay (cat litter etc) gives pearlwort a hard time, so start using that as a soil mix if you like. Weeds do grow in CL, but in much more manageable clumps. Almost all my trees are in pure CL and I have very few weeds.

I have a small pair of school scissors that have aluminium blades so they don't rust. I leave them on the bench especially for weeding. I find they if I open them a little and then press the blades into the soil either side of a small weed the blades act as spades to lift the weed and generally the roots are lifted too. This "little and often" approach helps me keep on top of the weeds.

This is spot on. It's just one factor that makes the tree slightly less than it could be. It would be very unlikely that a tree's death could be attributed solely to pearlwort but it's a contributing factor to less than ideal conditions.

Because I know it's a problem it's unsightly to me and I get rid of asap, but before I knew that I thought it was quite nice and thought of it decoratively like moss.

giving trees a good soak will make sure tree roots get water.
robbing nutrient would be minimal especially if you feed often.
yes it will affect drainage a little..

it is great for letting you know a tree needs water

Fair comment. But I must emphasise that I don't use it routinely, only a couple of times in the past when the pearlworl situation had reached ridiculous proportions.

Tweezers are definitely the answer if you keep it under control :smallthumb:
