These are 2 azaleas i bought from Lee 2 or 3 years ago. They both had quite a root chop last year when i took them out of the original old plastic pots. They grew well through last year and this is this years flowering as of today. I plan to put a bit of shape into the branches this year. Moving forward do i need to sacrifice the flowers and remove buds early to improve the growth of the plants next year ???

Many people say so (removing flowers) but I find the trees grow well enough even after flowering and its for the flowers that we have them. After the flowers wilt I'd cut them off.

I recently purchased an Azala (still not flowered yet!) and not knowing much about them started trawling the web for info, a couple of highlights would be this article (monthly time line for Azalea in America)

Also BonsaiTonight has some good blog posts about azalea and this one is relevant to your question Richard regarding flower removal ....

This one takes it a step further and removes the buds before they flower to increase foliar growth for trees in development ....

There is a fair few more on his site so use the search feature for 'Azalea' and have a browse,
