I've tried a few garden centres locally, but the all seem to be 6' tall with 3" trunks, and no branches lower down than 5'.

Is there a better place to start looking for something around the 18" mark?

Are you just looking for raw material? My local garden centres all have cotoneasters 12"-18" size in the shrubs section. There are lots of different cotoneasters but the small leaved ones will be in the shrub section not the tree section.

You could layer or chop - they air layer easily and backbud profusely. An 18" shrub will have a very small diameter trunk - probably only useful for shohin bonsai <8" tall.

6' tall and no branches below 5' skins like a standard. Be careful, about air layering, you want to look out for a graft join between the trunk and the branching part of the tree. Often standards are pendulus forms grated on to a long trunk of another species.

What species are you looking at? Cotoneaster Horizontalis is the species I believe is the most common for bonsai and the growth habit is well suited to cascade/semi cascade.

I've currently got a pre-bonsai Cotoneaster Wilsonii shrub I'm growing out but it's a few years away from doing any serious bonsai techniques on. I'm not sure how suitable it'll be but it was a cheap buy.

Thanks everyone, what's the opinion on buying via mail order?

I'm tempted to get five or six different plants from here - https://www.best4hedging.co.uk/cotoneaster-hedging-c49

The plants you get will be miniscule and will be so many years in the ground before training can begin I wouldn't even bother unless you cant get them anywhere else.

Every garden centre normally has cotoneaster in the shrubs section. Trunks the diameter of a finger for about £10. Still may be a while before you can start to bonsai it but at least you can pick an interesting trunk.

I've never seen 6 foot tall cotoneaster, they sound great!

Mail order is generally fine especially from a reputable/big supplier. The downside is you can't check a tree in detail for good nebari, trunk movement etc but at the cheaper end of the market (e.g. in this case buying from a hedging supplier not a bonsai specialist) this is probably not a problem.

As Sizzla say you need to be sure about the size of the trunk before buying. Most general nurseries will sell trees that are young with thin trunks for obvious cost reasons.

I couldn't get there in the end.

They wanted advance payment so as to have something ready at their despatch centre though, so it looks like I wouldn't have been able to pick my own anyway.

I'll try the shrubs section next time I'm in a garden centre.

If you know anyone with some small leafed cotoneaster, just ask for some of the berries. I have grown loads and they are easy, then you just need to grow on for a few years and bulk them up.

The other month I threw hundreds away

Big Morrisons have them in spring too, about pencil thickness for a few quid.
