A couple of months ago when I joined here with a solitary focus someone said something along the lines of, 'you won't be able to stick to one tree,' how right they were.

I've just come back from the nursery with those two one the left.

Any tips on what I should be doing with them?

Oh yeah, and I've got a couple of Colin Lewis books on the way today.

Just noticed the labels might not be too readable, so they are -

Ilex convexa

Pieris japonica

Only two, it's only a very mild case! Can't see what they are from the photo. My suggestion would be to do nothing , other feed and water until this winter. That way you will be able to spend time seeing what bits you like and dislike. It's very easy to rush in and cut bits off only to realise some time later you would have been better off going down another route. It's very tempting to try to prune, pot and wire all at once, only to kill the tree in the process. Spend the next few months acquiring potential trees you like the look of, then start work on them over the winter. If you have a collection of trees it's easier to stand back and decide whether they are suffiently advanced to start work on, need leaving untouched for another season, or putting on a board and planting in the ground for a few years.

I was restyling my border earlier this summer and as a result, a rather straggly Pieris was exposed from under a shrub I removed. Since seeing full sun, it has back budded significantly so I'd suggest putting yours in full sun, they seem to love it (counter to where I've seen them positioned in many gardens in Japan).

Thanks for the advice, I'll try and resist temptation for now then.
