Hi all I am looking to repot this new maple I received for my birthday and would like to know if I should just slip pot it or remove the nursery soil and replace with new. I am looking to grow this tree as much as I can to increase trunk size ready to create a bonsai in the future any advice would be great fully received.

Thanks in advance John.

Was not going to use the pot it is sitting in at the minute but into an air basket.

I'd leave it until Spring, then bare root it to sort the roots before growing on

I agree with Darren. There's a lot of benefit in waiting until spring to work on the roots, so not much point in slip potting now. The tree looks super healthy.

John - If that was mine I wouldn't be looking to make a bonsai out of the bottom section it looks too straight from what I can see (I also dont know what the roots are like). I'd still plant it in the ground next year for sure but I'd wire and shape some branches as low down as possible, cut off anything I couldn't bend with wire then let it grow for a few years. you then have a few good thick branches with good movement to airlayer! you get more that one bonsai out of the plant with a better root spreads than you would end up with if you just planted this tree in the ground on a board.
