Post subject:  Moving home, but want to take a maple tree

Hello all,

Moving home, hopefully for the last time but im taking some of my favourite shrubs and hopefully this tree.

I realise its the worst time of year to do this, but left with not much choice.

Its not a huge tree, bottom of the trunk measures 6 by 4 inches, trees about 9 or 10 foot tall.

I have moved it before in summer, from one side of the garden to the other.

The plan is to dig around the trunk with a 70/80cm diameter, cut the roots and put it in one of those large grow bags.

Plant it immediately when I get to the house with it

Any help appreciated, not moved a larger tree before

Its currently in an old gold fish bond, about 50 cm deep, been there for5 years.

Are you saying that the roots are effectively in a large pot and not just growing down into the ground ?
Also do you plan to remove some of the height before moving?

Hello, yes. When I planted the tree I had to put a few drainage holes in a thin concrete base at the bottom. so the roots wont be any deeper than 50 cm.

Im not sure about removing any height, would make life easier, but would preferably prefer not to.

Cheers

I lifted a 4ftx4ft sango-kaku Acer at the start of the summer during the heat wave to put in a pot as I was planning to sell the house so I could take it with me. I dug down about 2ft away from the trunk all the way round to sever the roots before lifting it with the root ball, straight in to a large pot that I kept in the shade and watered well. Amazingly it didn't miss a beat. Acer palmatum have small root balls so you shouldn't lose too much root ball of you go far enough round it. I didn't prune it at all.

One thing though, legally, if it's in the ground and you've sold the house then it's been sold with the house unless you specifically exclude it. The buyer may be happy for you to take it though or get your solicitor to list it as a fixture that's not staying.

Hi Chris,

Yeh, I understand about the legal issue, but stated I was leaving established edging but taking some trees and shrubs, to which they never came back with any queries.

Been looking into moving trees, apparently red acers are one of the better species to move.

I would give the ground a good soaking for 3 or 4 days before lifting. You may find you have a good football without large roots which need cutting.
When you lift , wrap the root ball well to keep moist.
When you plant you will probably need to stake well as if the tree can move around will damage new roots.

Football should read rootball.

Do you have to lift it now, or can you wait until the leaves drop which would be better for the tree. :thum:
