Post subject:  Any Scots Pine experts out there?

I have a Scots Pine Yamadori, 2nd season now. I am trying to promote adventitious back budding and have question.
I have just completed the Autumn needle reduction and as part of that have reduced some branches back, were these are in wrong place, do not help ramification, overlap etc, I have also reduced terminal buds to max 2 per terminal but still I have a lot of terminal buds on the tree, very healthy result of previous seasons actions. I presume these buds which are actually quite strong will now remain dormant till spring time.
Question - As my main priority is to produce more adventitious buds further back along the branches, am I better to remove current batch of terminal buds, as I read that terminal buds repress the development buds further back. I know that cutting back the branches allows new terminal buds to develop anyway as long as needles are left in place, so hope this would still apply
I have now started feeding strongly with Nitrogen free fertiliser. Next month I will also start wiring and possibly some further branch removal.
Basically I want to turbo charge adventitious buds so I can get current long straggly branch's back closer to trunk.
Many thanks

Tom B has some notes on handling scots for backbuds, over here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=18562

I think I would continue fertilising but leave it as is until next summer - but I'm definitely not an expert

Brendan,
Not claiming to be an expert, but as my name was mentioned:
I don't know for sure, but I'd suspect it may be just a little late to be removing this year's growth (which it sounds like you're talking about).
In deciding whether to do it I'd be influenced by the strength of the tree, whether you cut candles in the spring and so on. The question is whether the tree has sufficient reserves to push a new set of buds over the winter. It also sounds like you've done a fair amount of work on this tree - if it's only 2 years from collection, that may be pushing it a bit too hard. Again the vigour of the tree would determine that. All in all, I'd probably be wary about doing anything more and take it slower as Darren suggests.
I'm feeding my pines as normal at the moment - I think you actually want to be giving them nitrogen, to promote bud development. I normally feed heavily until quite late in the year.

I've found back budding occurs best when the tree is growing strongly and vigorously. (My biggest lesson learnt with pines was to give them a rest from my meddling). I've also found removing the terminal buds in spring will divert strength to inner buds.

Thanks for your comments guys,
Think I'll stick with the heavy feeding, wiring shortly and perhaps hold back on the buds for now. Tree is looking healthy and maybe I was unclear, although I have only had it for its 2nd year now it has been out of ground for at least 2 years before that so I am not worried about its health and I have read that scots pines can take some working, but I will strengthen it up from now in anticipation of possible repot in the spring
They say patience is a virtue, I'm obviously not very virtuous
Thanks again
