A thread revival.

The seeds are starting to fall (be blown) off my japanese maples now. As they fall off i am picking them up, and spreading them between a big couple of containers full of nothing more than compost. But i am going to give the stratification routine another try, i don't need the seedlings, but am determined to make it work!.so have sidelined a couple of dozen so far ready to bung in the fridge.

the only difference this year is that i am not going to get any seeds from outside the confines of my garden.

Here goes nothing!...

For those that have successfully grown from acorns, how long did it take before the trunk was about 10mm thick?

Me - still waiting, 3 years and still not 10mm. But that's Holm oak which is perennial and doesn't grow as fast or as thick as English oak

Cheers Bluesky, I saw a big pile of acorns at the side of a path about a month ago, wish I'd picked some up now.

Lately Ive been collecting a selection of different Crab Apples of various colour varieties during my travels .I extracted their pips, then put them in sealed bags of gritty compost in the fridge.
Does anyone have experince of growing these from seed? How long do they take?
I would have preferred to do air layers but none of the trees are local to me!

They are quite quick to germinate. I put a small jar of sand with the extracted pips in my fridge and they started to germinate in about a month. I removed the germinated seedlings and planted them leaving the rest which continued to germinate in stages over the rest of the year. The time consuming bit is after that as they are not quick growers and may take more than ten years to become mature enough to flower.

I've got a really good crop of crabapples this year so I will have a go at germinating some seeds - cheers Sputters.

I just checked the crab apple seeds in my fridge :- I sowed most of them in mid October in bags of gritty compost.
The Crab apple - Malus Red Sentinel have already sprouted so Ive transferred them into pots in my conservatory this evening.
No signs of life from the Wild Crab apples or Malus Golden Hornet yet, but hopefully I will soon have enough to start a bonsai orchard!

It's really nice when you see that tiny shoot poking out the soil isn't it!
My first English oak acorn germinated just before xmas, already 9cm tall :-)
