As the title says, is it a case of strolling through the woods, seeing something that you like the look of, and keeping an eye on it until you one day liberate it?

Permission from the landowner is needed, but if the plant won't be missed, it can be a grey area where, I can't promote theft on a public forum.

Basically yes but as John says the legalities of it requires some thought. I've collected a few times from my own back garden so no owner permission required there.

Also, after being 'liberated' there is a worrying chance of the tree dying. Trees in the wild push down massive roots, sometimes very deep, so you can increase the chances of its survival by severing roots a distance around the tree a year or more before you finally collect it.

Anything you purchase in a pot is already accustomed to a small root system, but then probably doesn't have a wide trunk even after years of growth. The compromise is to get a young bonsai or prebonsai and plant it in your garden or wherever. And here's the magic bit: plant it on top of a ceramic tile so that all the roots are forced to grow out horizontally before they can grow downwards. Like that, the roots are much easier to train back into a small pot, and you'll have a chunky trunk with lovely root flare at the base. :ugeek:

I wish someone had dug this Oak at the bottom of the garden up 60 or 70 years ago!!

I've been in this house for 29 years and it seems the same size as when we moved in!! :1crybaby:

I'd have it taken down but the busy body over the end of our garden says we can't have anything done with it as Bats roost in it!!, I've never seen any guano under the tree!!

I think i'll get a tree surgeons report as it keeps shedding large branches and next door has young kiddies that play in their garden :20help:
