Hi Sputnik and Oakrod, how much of a tiny root do you have to see before you tranfer to a pot? I have a load of Pyrenean oak acorns in the fridge, anda few have started pushing out tiniest roots, less than a millimetre. Do you pot them already or would you wait another week? Or doesn't it matter?

I have never cold stratified any oaks. They seem to germinate readily from fresh.

My q faginea and q rubra acorns continued to germinate over the winter and the spring but there was no sign of germination with the q palustris acorns. The acorns remained hard however so I didn’t discard them. Last week one germinated. Couldn’t believe it after all this time.

I've had very good success with acorns by just putting them in a pot on top of soil, covering with leaf litter and leaving the pot outside over winter, just like nature. :-)

Tried that but the squirrels and wood pigeons and even hungry foxes and badgers root them out in my garden. Even after they germinate I have to cover them until the last of the acorn has shrivelled and disappeared.
