I'd be worried that, in a greenhouse, the magnified warmth of some winter sunshine would do more harm to the trees than leaving them out in the cold. I'm sure in their native environment (Japan?) they tolerate a fair amount of cold in the winter. Again, not a scientific theory, just my own gut feeling. I've never sheltered my acers. |

I only put the tridents and other tender trees in smaller pots in the greenhouse plus a couple of big tender ones. Some trees are put in there because the pots are worth more than the trees!! and don't want them cracking Graham |

Has anyone here lost a trident to the cold? How cold does it have to be? Thanks. |

I don't think i've ever had a true Trident, Acer Ginala (Amur Maple) are often mis-named as Trident, Not 100% sure about this one as I think the true Trident leaves are more like a tulip shape, I reckon this is a Ginala though! I had this given me for free, It used to be much taller but died right back down to the bottom two branches before I received it so I grew it in to a broom style, I may put it in to a Bonsai dish next year rather than this patio pot!!
