I was prancing round a garden centre earlier and happened on this little thing, a quick Google suggested that it would make suitable bonsai material so for a fiver I dived in.

They had plenty of choice but this was the best of the lot.

All I know is it needs moist but well-drained soil slighly on the acid side - don't know how they respond as bonsai as I managed to kill my garden centre purchase before I'd had a chance to do much to it - it got missed out when watering in a very hot spell the year before last and it was a goner.

I think I'll sling it in a large tub of Rhododendron compost for a while and see how it gets on.

I'll be interested to see if anyone has any experience with Kalmia Latifolia, I'm growing some from seed but I'd considered them destined for the garden as my googling suggested they weren't very suitable for bonsai.

Having said that, your photos seem to suggest some potential, maybe the species is difficult...
