Is it worth bringing a tree indoors over night to try and dry it out a bit ? I seem to be bringing one in every evening to clean up and putting it out again in the morning . Its better than the offerings on TV !

Sumo elm this evening

I would't bring any tree of mine in over night, there just placed in a sheltered area under the benches and that's where they will stay until spring. imo bringing them in may give them a false start even if it is one night??? i'll be interested to see other points of view ;-)

Hi

Just as well you don't own a forest Cuchilo. :suro:

Leave them outside with some wind protection and they will be fine,

I don't believe in mollycoddling my trees.

I would agree with Will. I doubt that big temperature changes would be very good. If you want to reduce the wetness of the pot then under shelter or cover the soil with foil. Even with the soil covered it will not necessarily dry the soil because the temperatures are too low to cause any evaporation.

Fair enough i guess . I'll work on them and put them out again . I'm not working on them outside though , that would be insane
I'll add pics as i go , feel free to join in with yours if youre working on anything .

Errrrrrrmmmm ....... How many trees makes a forest

That sumo elm is a beauty!

One night of slightly higher temperature would not stimulate any kind of chemical change during true dormancy. It would need to be for a prolonged period of time, and be after the dormant tree has accumulated enough "chill hours" below 6°C.
This article explains it very well, although written in North America, the biological explanation is independent of region: https://northernwoodlands.org/outside_story/article/how-do-trees-know-when-to-wake-up
Quote:
Once truly dormant in late fall, trees will not respond in any fashion to warm temperatures. Before becoming receptive to wake-up calls, a certain amount of time in the cold must first accrue.

Trident Maple tonight .
A bit of hand carving on the dead wood at the apex and wired a few branches . I'd like to cut the apex off and pick a new leader but the very fine pruning i have done leaks water so i think i will leave it for now .

Trees need two elements to wake up: an increase in warmth and an increase in (natural) day light. And both those events need to be present over a period of time.

Bringing your trees inside for some work and bringing them back out the next day or even a few days later won't trigger any awakening. You can work on your trees in the comfort of your house with peace of mind.
