Post subject:  Help my ficus microcarpa gingsing is losing its top leaves

Good morning all,

I've had my ficus microcarpa gingsing for about 6 weeks and its started losing its top leaves, they ate turning brown and some are getting black spots. it's about 1 meter tall. And in a 36 cm diameter pot.

I'm having issues uploading photos as my phone cant reduce the picture enough to reach the 200mb limit.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it

Many thanks

In terms of the photos you could use a hosting site. There are a few threads here on how to do it.

I use a free app on my phone called Lit Photo to reduce the size. It's available for Android on the Play Store, I guess it's probably not available for iPhone users though.
It lets you resize the photo by a percentage. Whenyou view the photo, tap 'share' button and select the Lit Photo app. I find generally 25% or 33% is still large enough to see the details but small enough to be under 200Kb.

Please take a picture of the soil too and let us know a few more things:
- where is it usually located
- how often to you water it

If you've only had it for about 6 weeks it is likely that the leaf loss is due to the tree being moved from its previous location to its new one. Light level and temperature variation can both cause leaf drop on ficus. However, there are also less healthy causes too so please provide more detail on location, soil, watering regime etc.

Thanks for the replies,

I read somewhere that you have to water the tree once the top quarter of inch of soil is dry? Is that correct in the first instance?

The tree is positioned in a north facing window but the sun come through it from the side as it's a square bay and gets the sun (when it's out in england) for a good few hours.

I saw a few of these over the summer in Adrian hall garden centre , They ranged from £50 to £100 and i thought from the size of the tree they where a bargain . I sent some pictures over to my local workshop thinking he would be interested but he advised not to buy as they where ( indian i think ) and would not do well in this country . The wire marks in the trunk have me thinking it is one of those trees but hopefully i am wrong and your tree will be fine .
If the leaves are yellow brown it could possibly be spider mite ? A spray with neem oil wont do the tree any harm .

Thank you for the additional pictures and comments. I can see why you fell in love with it.
Your watering regime sounds reasonable and the soil doesn't look too bad either (although some will say it's too organic). So, as Chris mentioned, it could be just a case of the tree needing to deal with the new location.
Do check for spider mite as above and indeed a spray of any appropriate liquid will do no harm.
And do not leave the dead leaves on the ground as they could become a nest for nasty stuff...
Good luck - keep us posted
