Post subject:  Acer Palmatum Dissectum freebie
My dad bought this for £15, because he wanted the pot. So I got the tree for free. I already posted about it on reddit, and got a mix of "air layer off the top after the dead section" and "keep the dead section it has character" type responses. What would you guys recommend?

I've got a couple of dissectum and generally they're quite hard/slow work as bonsai so mine have remained as patio trees (i.e in large pots outside), although I do apply bonsai pruning techniques to build structure as best as possible.

With yours I think the base is a feature and the change of angle improves it, although it does lack taper of any sort and has little movement except at the curve which unfortunately bulges) I'd be tempted to ground or air layer just on the curve at it's thickest point). The top seems to start with three branches - the main trunk and two primary branches off it (can't quite tell if they originate at the same place). I'd be thinking about removing the one lower right as it seems to curve back on itself. The next significant branch up has a small branch coming from its base and then curving back over it. I would want to remove that and possibly the end of the primary branch as it seems lacking in taper and has no fine twigging on it currently. Then possibly style movement leftward to crate a flow in that direction creating harmony between the lower branch and the canopy above.

Dissectum have lovely foliage but are hard structure wise so if this were mine I'd play with it and enjoy it but not have high expectations. Basic concept/virtual attached.

Thanks, that looks like a good plan. Yeah, those bottom two branches are at about the same origin point. I won't have high expectations, it's my second dissectum, and tbh I'm happy doing this for my own amusement rather than entering shows or anything, so doesn't need to be high class (although I would like it to be as nice as I can make it ofc!)
